No teaching experience is necessary as our program includes a 1 month teacher training TEFL course.

Program Outline

Training & Orientation. The program begins with a four week intensive Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) training course in Beijing.

You will learn the skills required to teach English as a foreign language, as well as receive a comprehensive range of social and cultural activities during the training.

Teacher Internship. After the 1 month TEFL training period, you will be placed in a Chinese school as an English teacher intern.

Live, eat and breathe life as a local in China and receive the rewarding experiences that comes with being a teacher. You will also receive accommodation, meals, Mandarin classes and a monthly allowance.

After you have completed the training and internship, you will be an internationally certified TEFL teacher, which you could use to travel and work in countries like Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and many more!

The TEFL course on the Teach and Travel program is delivered by English Language Company (ELC) – a fully accredited and internationally recognized provider of language education based in Sydney, Australia.

  • The four weeks training course is designed for candidates with no previous teaching experience. Throughout the training, interns will acquire a thorough knowledge in the key areas essential to their successful performance as English teachers in Chinese schools (to view a sample of the training timetable, please click here).
  • Towards the completion of the theoretical component, one week is allocated for teaching practice. During this week, candidates are required to teach a class of Chinese school students based on self-developed materials and lesson plans as well as observe and give feedback on the lessons taught by their peers’ teaching.
  • Having completed the one-month TEFL training, interns will spend one semester in a Chinese school as EFL teacher interns, planning and delivering their own lessons on a daily basis and being a part of vibrant Chinese school life.
  • Upon successful completion of a one-semester placement in their schools, the interns are awarded with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate. The ELC TEFL certificate is the culmination of rigorous teacher training and practical experience. Depending on candidates’ educational and supplementary qualifications, they could go on to work their way around the world.

TEFL Course Structure

Theoretical component*
(120 hours of coursework)

Four weeks of face-to-face TEFL training covering the following modules:

  • Classroom management
  • Vocabulary
  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Listening and reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar and language awareness
  • Lesson planning
  • Timetabling and syllabus design
  • Teaching young learners

The teaching practice week that includes:

  • Five days of teaching in a Chinese school
  • Preparing teaching materials and lesson plans
  • Peer observation and feedback
  • Individual performance evaluation and feedback

Practical experience**
(180 hours of teaching practice in a school environment)

A one-semester placement in a Chinese school that includes:

  • 10-15 hours of face-to-face teaching per week
  • Lesson planning in cooperation with Chinese teachers
  • Participating in a range of extracurricular activities and special events

* At the end of the one-month TEFL training, candidates receive a Statement of Completion that confirms their successful completion of the theoretical component of the course.
** Upon successful completion of the practical component, candidates are awarded with the English Language Company TEFL certificate.

The Wonders of China

China never fails to impress its countless visitors with its many unique characteristics.

The world's third largest country, China boasts a long and very rich history that spans many thousands of years. It also has some of the most recognizable sites of both natural and architectural beauty that will leave you breathless.

Whether you want to experience the fast-paced city life in major cities in the east, or authentic folklore of the ethnic tribes towards the west, there is never a lack of experiences for any visitor. Whether you prefer the balmy south or the frigid north, China is a destination that will not disappoint you.

Some of the most picturesque natural landscapes can be found in China and it is home to some of the most impressive historical structures built by man.

The most prominent of these structures has to be the Great Wall of China, which is the world's longest wall built for defense and has never ceased to amaze its visitors. Similarly, the Forbidden City and Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses are just as grand in their elaborate design and scale.

There are also the unique and colourful events and festivals hosted by China every year that are a major reason in itself for you to visit the country.

You will be treated to the most spectacular fireworks, lion dances and other traditional practices. Some of these festivals include the Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.

Economically, China is unrivaled in it's growth and recently became the 2nd largest ecomomy in the world! While most of the global economy is suffering under a recession, China continues to expand in all sectors.

Teaching Internship in a Chinese School

Upon successful completion of the TEFL training, you will spend a semester in a Chinese school as an English teacher intern as part of the Teach & Travel China program.

Placement Regions

We work with schools across China with limited numbers of placements in each region but we will endeavour to match your placement preference.

Placement regions are in both cosmopolitan and less urbanized areas, but wherever you are we are sure you will have the time of your life!

Northern China includes Beijing and all provinces north of the Yangtze River. The temperatures are cooler than the south and humidity is low in the winter.

Southern China includes Shanghai and all provinces south of the Yangtze River. Temperatures are warmer than the north and can be very humid in the summer. 

You will always be placed with a fellow program participant so you don’t have to worry about being the only foreigner in your area.

Classroom Ages

During your one month training, our trainers will be assessing your progress and giving us feedback on what age group/s is suitable for you. This is taken into account along with your stated preference.

Age groups include kindergarten (2-6 year olds), primary (6-12 year olds), junior high (13-15 year olds), senior high (age above 15) and university/training centre (age above 18).

What is Teaching Like in China?

We work with a variety of schools all across China. This includes private and public schools, students of all age ranges, schools of all sizes and with varying English levels. 

Teaching will be different for everyone, but if you are open minded and dedicated then it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life!

You can expect to teach up to 15 hours face to face lessons and classes can range from one on one teaching to handling a class in excess of 60 students.

You can also expect to become involved in the school’s extracurricular activities with things like Mandarin corners and English competitions.

Immerse yourself in school life and the community and you will be rewarded with a fulfilling and life changing experience.
